Sometimes you need to record your screen right now: to answer a support question, show a colleague a process or capture a bug. Installing a screen recorder, granting it permissions and learning where it saves files is a lot of friction for a two-minute video. On a locked-down work laptop, you may not be allowed to install anything at all.

You don't have to. Your browser is already an online screen recorder: every modern desktop browser can record a tab, a window or your whole screen, along with your microphone, using its own built-in screen sharing. This guide explains how browser screen recording works, how to get good audio from it, and how to turn the recording into a finished tutorial.

Here's how it works in howtovideos.ai, from choosing what to share to a rendered video:

The written steps, with screenshots, are on the help page: How to record your screen in the browser.

How browser screen recording works

When a website asks to record your screen, the browser itself shows the picker and asks what to share. The website never sees anything you don't choose. You pick one of three things:

OptionWhat it recordsBest for
A browser tabOne tab only, even if you switch awayWeb apps and websites; the sharpest result
A windowOne app windowA desktop app, if your browser allows it
Your entire screenEverything on that displayTasks that move between several apps

For most tutorials, a single tab is the right choice. It gives the sharpest video, and notifications, other tabs and your desktop never appear in it.

The microphone is a separate permission. The first time, the browser asks whether the site can use it. Allow it, and your voice is recorded alongside the screen.

What you need before you start

  • A computer running Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Browser recording is for computers, not phones or tablets.
  • A microphone, if you want to narrate. A headset or a simple USB mic sounds better than a laptop's built-in one, but the built-in one is fine for a first try.
  • The app or website you want to show, open in another tab and already signed in.
  • A clean screen. Close tabs you don't need and silence notifications, so nothing private shows up.

On a Mac, the first time you share a window or your whole screen, macOS may ask you to give your browser screen recording permission in System Settings. Sharing a single tab usually doesn't need it.

How to record your screen with voice in the browser, step by step

These steps are for howtovideos.ai, which records straight from your Tutorials page with nothing to install.

  1. Choose Record your screen. On your Tutorials page, choose Record your screen.
  2. Set it up. Type what you're showing; it becomes the title. Keep Narrate with my microphone ticked to talk it through, and check that the level bar moves when you speak. If it doesn't, check the browser's microphone permission and which mic is selected.
  3. Pick what to share. Choose Start recording. Your browser asks what to share. Pick the tab with your app and choose Share.
  4. Go through the task. After a three-second countdown, switch to that tab and do the task at a normal pace, saying what you're doing as you go.
  5. Stop when you're done. Choose Stop in the floating window or at the bottom of your Tutorials page, or use your browser's own Stop sharing button.
  6. Make the tutorial. Watch it back, then choose Make tutorial.
  7. Choose the basics. A short guided setup opens. Choose the video's shape, captions and cursor, or close it and set them later.
  8. Check it and render. The editor opens with your steps and script. Check them, then choose Render video.

Your recording is saved on your computer as it records. If the upload fails, you can try again without recording the whole thing twice.

How to get clear audio from a browser recording

The picture in a browser recording is usually fine. The audio is where most recordings go wrong. A few habits make a big difference:

  • Use a headset or an external mic. It sits closer to your mouth and picks up less of the room.
  • Pick a quiet, soft room. Hard walls echo. A room with curtains, carpet or a sofa sounds far better than a kitchen.
  • Do a five-second test. Say a sentence, watch the level bar, and make sure it moves without hitting the top.
  • Keep the mic in one place. Moving closer and further away makes the volume rise and fall.
  • Mute other apps. Chat pings and calendar alerts get recorded too.
  • Speak at a normal pace. You're explaining, not presenting. Say what you're clicking and why.

Don't worry about sounding polished. In howtovideos.ai, saying what you're doing as you click helps write a better script, even if you choose a different narrator voice later. Your words guide the script; they don't have to be the final narration.

Browser recording vs a desktop screen recorder

Browser recording is the quickest way to start, but it isn't the only option. Here's when to use each.

If you need to record a desktop app rather than a website, install the howtovideos.ai desktop recorder for Mac or Windows. If you already have a recording from Loom, QuickTime, OBS or Zoom, you don't need to record again; see how to turn a screen recording into a training video.

Common problems and how to fix them

The browser doesn't ask what to share. Make sure you're on a computer, not a phone or tablet, and that the browser is up to date. Some work-managed browsers block screen sharing; ask your IT team if the option never appears.

The level bar doesn't move. The site may not have microphone permission, or the wrong mic is selected. Check the permission icon in the address bar and your system's sound input.

The video is blurry. You probably shared the whole screen on a large monitor. Share a single tab instead, and zoom the page so text is comfortable to read.

Something private appeared on screen. Close other tabs and silence notifications before you start. Sharing one tab rather than the whole screen keeps everything else out of the recording.

The upload failed. In howtovideos.ai the recording is saved on your computer as it records, so you can try the upload again without recording it twice.

Turn the recording into a tutorial

A raw screen recording is useful once. A tutorial is useful every time someone gets stuck. After you stop recording, howtovideos.ai reads the recording, finds the steps and writes the script. You check each step, then render a narrated video with zooms and captions, plus a written guide with a screenshot for each step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I record my screen without downloading software?

Yes. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on a computer can all record your screen with their built-in screen sharing. In howtovideos.ai you choose Record your screen on your Tutorials page, with nothing to install.

How do I record my screen and voice at the same time in the browser?
